I have always been a big fan of the Star Wars films. I remember seeing the original Star Wars movie in Manuka Cinema here in Canberra, way back in 1977. However it has only been in recent years that I have understood the significance of some elements of the plot in these movies, particularly in the prequels.
The prequels (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith), chronicle the decline of the Republic and its transformation into the Empire. Emperor Palpatine used staged terrorist attacks and political manoeuvring in order to gain dictatorial power. He used these staged terror attacks to launch the Clone Wars, where he was controlling both sides of the war. The greatest threat to the Republic and democracy was from within. This parallels what has happened in the western world generally, and America in particular. The American Government has used staged terror attacks such as 9/11, to launch phony wars based on lies and to give greater dictatorial power to the Federal Government.
